DATE: October 18-21,
2001
VENUE:Shanghai Silport Golf Club
The Best of Asian golf was showcased at the US$400,000 Volvo China
Open, arguably one of Asia's Foremost national events.
Korean star Charlie Wi and Tongchai Jaidee of Thailand
fought tooth and nail in a spectacular final round showdown at
the Shanghai Silport Golf Club before Wi triumphed at the last
hole with a 10-foot birdie putt.
The California-based Wi led Thongchai by three strokes
heading into the final 18 holes, but Thongchai sparked his fightback
with an eagle and two birdies in the opening five holes. On three
occasions, Thongchai playing in the group ahead of Wi, drew level
but the Korean leader responded superbly with birdies at the next
hole to edge back in front and eventually claim victory.
