On Friday, 11 September, The British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai hosted its annual corporate golf tournament at Shanghai Silport Golf Club. In stark contrast to last year’s event, the ten teams who made the journey out to Silport were rewarded with some glorious sunshine to complement the endless supply of chilled beers and Pimms that were also on offer. Billed as the Centenary year Golf Tournament, this year’s event was packed full with fun challenges and various bonus features to keep interest levels high, regardless of how the players were actually scoring on the day. Especially popular was the return of our Pimms refreshment carts which were continuously circling the course to ensure both spirits and hydration levels were kept high.
After a four hours’ competition, and through the forgiving Texas Scramble format and having a couple of mulligans on sale (RMB 1,200 being raised for charity in the process), the final shake out saw some of the closest scores ever witnessed at a Chamber event. Indeed, the top 4 positions were all decided by a back 9 count back. Individually, the Longest Drive was won by Sam Allen with an impressive 275 yards and James Allan, with his iron tee-shot to within 3 yards of the hole, took home the Nearest the Pin prize. By the time all the prizes were dished out, the wine was already in full flow and the buffet dinner provided by Silport ensured everyone left satisfied with their Friday afternoon out of the office.
The host announced that thanks to all sponsors and players for their support and participation and welcome everyone back to join the match next year but before then, coming up next month on Friday the 30th of October, a 16 player strong British Chamber team will be heading back to Silport to take on the Americans at the inaugural Shanghai Ryder Cup event.
