Haiyang: Tiger Beach received perhaps its highest praise yet when the Shandong Province club was ranked the No. 1 links course in the country in the July issue of China Golf Digest.

In a 12-page feature titled “Tiger Beach --- A great treasure guarding the sea,” photo-journalist Robin Moyer praised the sister course of both Silport and Carnoustie for “its landform which quickly changed from beach to pastoral setting.”

The Hong Kong-based writer described Tiger Beach owner and designer Beta Soong as a strong- minded person. “When he found that the style of the back nine was different from that of the front nine, he decided to rebuild.”

He called the design of the course “artful” and described the difficulty of the 59 menacing and often-deep pot bunkers around the course. “Sometimes the players will feel cheated as they seem to be too deep. But in fact, it is easy for players to avoid them.”

The ever-changing weather at Tiger Beach also drew much ink, quoting the famous Scottish saying “No wind, no golf.” Moyer wrote that to really experience the real Tiger Beach, then a person had better play numerous rounds under the different weather conditions.

“It really a challenge for testing your patience and your skills. In addition, choosing the right club, considering the distance and definition are also important for better scores. Right now, the course draws a great many people’s attentions from both in the country and abroad.”

Following Tiger Beach, the other top four links courses in China in order were Fuzhou Straits, Boao Golf Club in Hainan, Shanghai Links and Suzhou SunIsland.

Moyer closed his tribute to Tiger Beach in telling how Soong planned to design and build another 18 holes at the club and a hotel.
