AmCham Shanghai held its Fourth Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Shanghai Silport Golf Club on September 22. Eager for some friendly competition benefiting the Shanghai Angel Charity Foundation (SACF), 128 golfers and guests turned out on a balmy Friday to raise US$13,470 for the group’s Wellness Program for Children of Migrant Workers.

This year, the AmCham Shanghai Corporate Social Responsibility Committee selected the SACF from a pool of 14 noon-profit applicants. Based in Shanghai, the SACF focuses on promoting community health and providing disadvantaged people with proper medical care. The SACF Wellness Program for Children of Migrant Workers strives to improve the health conditions for migrant worker children in addition to increasing their hygiene awareness. According to the SACF, some 250,000 migrant worker children are now living in poverty in Shanghai.

Proceeds from this year’s tournament will benefit 500 children of migrant workers studying at the Zhu Lin School in Pudong, providing them with an annual physical and medical treatment, in addition to funding healthcare education programs and improving the school infirmary. AmCham’s contribution will go far in aiding these children, most of whom are impoverished and lack proper healthcare and awareness of hygiene, putting them at greater risk for common diseases.

At the tournament, AmCham members and their guests were eager to show their support for the SACF, turning out to compete in the chipping and putting contests sponsored by Home Depot. On the golf course, Jay Hoenig, Julius Santos, David Ting and Jon Preston claimed first place in the team competition, finishing just ahead of Steven Robinson, Zhi Yang, Phil Davis and Leon Chen. Dinggui Gao and Barbara Jobb hit the longest drives of the day, while Francis Lui, Barbara Jobb and Terri Lau were victorious in the Closest-to-the-pin contest, taking home prizes from Haworth Office Furniture.

After a day of friendly competition, a bevy of lucky draw prizes were up for grabs. Grand prize winner Michael Carson and a friend will soon be on their way to Guam, with airfare and accommodation courtesy of the Guam Visitors Bureau. Other winners took home generous prizes from the Four Seasons Resort in Bali, Sheraton Suzhou Hotel & Towers, Dragonfly Therapeutic Retreat, AsiaXPAT and the Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Special thanks to Beta Soong and his staff at the Shanghai Silport Golf Club for providing a first-rate venue, all the event and prize sponsors for their many contributions, and all golfers who came to play for a wonderful cause. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
