 Shanghai: The competition to determine SilportĄ¯s 2010 club champions got off to an early start this year when 30 players contested the January Monthly Medal over the East and Center course layouts, just three days into the new decade.
Less than three weeks after Fujisono Hiromu and Li Li Yun emerged the 2009 Group A (handicaps one to 18) and Group B (handicaps 19 and above) champions, respectively, at the second annual Grand Monthly Medal championship, the first medal of the new year attracted a healthy number of new members and first-time participants.
Among them, Uchida Ryoji made an impressive debut. The 14 handicap shot a 91 for a nett 77 in the sunny but windy conditions to finish a close runner-up behind Group A nett champion Johnny Chen. The longtime Silport member, a six handicap, carded a round of 10-over 82 for a nett 76.
Harada Yukio had a more decisive victory in Group B as the Japanese member, a 22 handicap, shot a 91 for a nett 69. Korean member Hae Hahn finished runner-up when she shot a 99 for a nett 73.
Other honors saw Bryan Huang capture the long drive with a 260-yard blast on the Center Course ninth hole, while 2009 champion Hiromu took the nearest-the-pin when he put his tee shot to within seven feet of the flag on the East Course third hole.
Along with Ryoji, Chen, Yukio and Hae, Qian Jinghong also gained a spot for December Grand Monthly Medal field when his name was pulled in a lucky draw.
As its title implies, the Monthly Medal is a competition strictly for Silport members.
