CHEN SHENZHEN-BOUND AFTER A ‘KLASSIK’ PERFORMANCE
Shanghai, China: Chen Zhangning (pictured) put his detailed knowledge of the East and Center course layouts to good use when the Silport member secured one of the three spots available to represent Shanghai at the recent local qualifier for the Volvo China Klassik.

Playing against a field of 83 amateur players, including 25 Volvo car owners, Chen, a 13.2 handicap, shot a round of 84 to take the low nett honor with score of 70.8. Ren Jie, president of Lawton Institution, captured

both the low gross prize with a six-over 78 and the long-drive competition. Dong Jian was the Volvo owner gross champion after shooting an 89.

All three players will now travel to Mission Hills Golf Resort on October 24 to compete in the national final of the Volvo Klassik China. The tournament at the Shenzhen-area club features the winners from the 13 preliminary events held around the country.

Standing out at the Silport event was former China ping pong great Jiang Jialiang. The 1985 and 1987 world champion failed to turn in a memorable performance on the fairways but thrilled the field when he presented one of the awards at the post-tournament ceremony.
