Shanghai,
China: A group of Shanghai-based Hong Kong expatriates demonstrated
the need for continued vigilance against the SARS virus through
a charity golf tournament held at Shanghai Silport Golf Club.
The Hong Kong Sports Association Charity Cup sponsored by ITT Industries,
raised more than RMB 25,000 for the Shanghai Charity Foundation
from the 64-player field. The charity will delegate the money to
various groups involved in the treatment and fight against the deadly
virus.

Edwin Ng, chairman and founder of the Hong
Kong Sport Association, said many Hong Kong expats were living
in Shanghai, enjoyed the city and wanted to do something to contribute
to the fight against SARS.
He said the epidemic had been greatly felt by Hong Kong people,
both at home and abroad, as the virus had killed 296 people in
the city and infected 1,755. As of today, the Hong Kong government
had reported no new cases of the severe acute respiratory syndrome
in 20 days.
Peter Mui, ITT Industries sales and marketing director Greater
China Philippines, added despite the dwindling numbers in new
cases, the fight against SARS was not over.
“Our company (Flygt pumps) has been in China since 1995
and we hadn’t contributed much to local society. When the
SARS virus broke out we took this opportunity to work with the
HKSA to show our concern for the people here,” he said.
“We are taking this moment to encourage people to take more
exercise and participate in more outdoor activities to improve
health. We have to remain vigilant in fighting this disease to
the end,” Mui said.
On the course, Christopher Chan was the star on the day as he
shot 10-over-par 82 to earn the low gross honor. Ernest Wong took
the low nett prize when he shot a nett 65.4.
Sponsors at the charity tournament included Coca-Cola, Ashworth,
Vision Club, Borghese and Shanghai Silport. |
