The 17th leg of the Volvo Klassic-China stopped by Shanghai Silport
as 124 players teed off in scorching conditions on the Championship
Course, the same layout the Swedish auto giant uses to host the
annual Volvo China Open.
The tournament was one of 20 the
company stages throughout the country during the year. The field
features Volvo car owners, their friends and members from the
golf clubs. The nett winner, the gross winner and the car-owner
winner advance to the 2004 final to be held August 20 in Beijing.
After Volvo China director Ma Fusheng announced the rules and
conditions of the tournament and Li Jianqiang, XXXXXXXXXXXXXX,
teed off the opening shot, the event got underway in the shotgun
start.
Xu Qin and Ren Jie, two players well known in various amateur
tournaments around Shanghai, staged a dual that could only be
decided by a countback. Both players finished with a score of
five-over 77 but it was Xu who would take the gross title as he
shot 39 on the back nine to Ren’s 40.
Cui Guanghui, a 12 handicap, took the low nett after shooting
an 83 for a nett 71 while Li Jianqiang was the Volvo owner nett
winner. The 10.8 handicap shot a 10-over 82 for a nett 71.2.
While nobody won the Volvo car on offer for a hole-in-one,. Wang
Wenzhang prevailed in winning the nearest-the-pin contest. Shi
Xiang, a 30 handicap, showed his strength off the tee as he outdrove
all others to win the longest drive contest.
Xu, Cui and Li now advance to the Beijing final.
