SILPORT SUMMER CUP PROVES A SCORCHER

Shanghai: Silport’s Summer Cup lived up to its namesake as 96 members and their guests teed it up in extremely hot condition for the club’s third members’ tournament of the year.
Playing on Silport’s championship layout with the temperature topping 35 degrees Celsius, the players were divided up into three different groups to reflect their individual ability and handicap.

Hong Guojin shot a three-over-par 75 to shoot the low score of the day and win the group A low gross prize. Pan Guoping, a 7.2 handicap, shot a 78 to win the low nett with a nett 70.8.

Other categories saw Yang Fanglin shoot a 16-over 88 to win the group B low gross while Dong Wude won the low nett. The 13.2 handicap, shot a 88 for a nett 74.8. Group C saw Mr Kongqi named the low gross champion with a score of 92 while Wu Rongde took the low nett category with a nett 72.2.

Mr Uchida was the low gross champion in the guest category with a nett 72.0.
Gao Hongniang displayed his skill in both his long game and accuracy. He showed his driving skills on the West Course ninth hole when he outdrove all others to win the long drive contest, while on the West Course third hole, he captured the near-to-center prize.
After a long, hot day on the course, the players welcomed the opportunity to repair to a party room which had been set up especially in the club’s upstairs to celebrate. After a meal and cold refreshments, prizes such as crystal trophies, golf equipment, caps, Scotch whisky, hotel stays and juice makers were awarded to the winners.

“It takes a special kind of player to compete under such hot conditions. Many people wouldn’t have bothered in this weather,” said Jack Huang, Silport’s general manager. “But Silport members love golf and it really shows with the support that we get for the various members’ tournaments.

“The Spring Cup was played under really cold and wet conditions and we had a full field. Today was really hot and still we received a strong turnout. The competitive spirit of our membership really shines through on such occasions.”
