Shanghai: Volvo made
a welcome return to Shanghai Silport in a different form when
the Swedish automotive giant hosted a qualifying event for the
Volvo Masters Amateur tournament.
Playing on the same Championship layout that had hosted the Volvo
China Open for the past six years, the global tournament that
is contested in 22 countries for more than 75,000 participants,
attracted a field of 116 players in the first year the event had
been contested in China.
Playing on the Center and West Course layouts under sunny conditions,
Peng Longde claimed the low gross honor when the 3.6 handicap
fired an impressive two-over 74. Gao Di, a 7.2 handicap, shot
a four-over 76 to claim the low nett prize with a score of nett
68.8, while Zhu Yuzhou won the Volvo owner category as the 10.8
handicap shot 84 for a nett score of 73.2.
A generous prize of a brand new Volvo S40 that was on offer for
a hole-in-one went unclaimed. Earlier this year in March, the
carmaker had to part with one of its luxury automobiles when an
ace was recorded at a qualifying tournament held in Fushan, Guangdong.
The winners of the Silport tournament have now qualified for the
China Final to be held at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen,
Guangdong, this autumn. The winners of that tournament will qualify
for one of the 72 spots in the World Final to be contested at
the La Quinta Golf Resort in Marbella, Spain, in October.
