Shanghai: Silport members were out in full force for the final members’ tournament of the year as a field of 140 players contested the Year End Membership Cup.
With Santa Claus on hand to greet every player with a gift, the festive mood was evident prior to the tournament as the members exchanged season’s greetings and family photos were snapped.
Playing on the Championship Course (West and Center layouts) under sunny but cool conditions, Chen Zhangning proved the dominant player on the day in claiming the low gross prize with a round of six-under 78. The 7.2 handicap got off to an excellent start when he birdied the second hole to make the turn at even-par 36. As the wind picked up, a double bogey six on the par-four No. 10 hole and a triple bogey on the par-five No. 14 threatened to derail his round but he pulled it together with pars on the last three holes for a closing 42 to beat 7.2 handicap Huang Hui by three strokes. Zheng Xishan, a 9.6 handicap, was second runner up, five shots off the pace.
Japanese member Naoki Kobayashi, a 24 handicap, also got off to a strong start when he birdied the first hole on his way to winning the low nett competition with a round of 92 and a nett 68 score. Gu Hongren (19.2 handicap) was runner up with a nett 70.8, followed by Yi Zailong (nett 71.68).
Lee Ju-ae proved the best of the ladies as the South Korea native, a 25.2 handicap, shot a score of 100 to claim the ladies low nett with a nett 74.8.
Other honors saw Hong Guojin and Chun Myung-hee each captured a longest drive prize, and Zhang Lin and Xiong Yongjian the nearest-the-pin prizes.
Among the honors in the guest category, Chen Wei claimed the low gross as the 9.6 handicap was a model of consistency in shooting four-over 40 in each nine for an eight-over-par 80. Xu Ziping, a 22.8 handicap, was the guest low nett with a nett score of 71.2.
Following the tournament, the players repaired to the upstairs restaurant to enjoy a wine tasting session courtesy of Bonne Sante wine boutique. As the meal was served, a presentation was made chronicling the achievements of Silport over its 10-year history, followed by singing and dancing entertainment.
