Shanghai: Silport teed off its 2006 competition season when 134 members and guests turned out to contest the Spring Membership Cup under sunny and warm conditions.
Playing on the clubĄ¯s Championship Course (West and Center layouts), Park K. Chan proved the dominant player as the South Korean businessman stayed true to his 3.6 handicap when he shot a 3-over 75 to claim the low gross honor by an impressive four strokes. For his effort, Park received a trophy and a Nike cash coupon valued at RMB5,000. Kim Guangxia was a distance second after a round of 79.
Kim Yang maintained the South Korean dominance when the local consulate general, a 14.4 handicap, shot an 86 for a 71.6 nett and the low nett prize. Twelve handicap Chen Zhangnin was runner-up with a nett 72 after carding an 84.
Chen Jen showed that she was in good form in the early season as the former Shanghai-level tennis player won the ladies low nett. The 12 handicap, a Silport founding member who plays twice a week, shot an 85 for a nett 73 score.
Other winners on the day included Lee Nina and Craig Peacock who each claimed a longest drive, while Yang Fanling and Lee Renheng won the nearest-the-pin prizes.
Among the guests, Gu Binan had the guest low gross, while Yin Zhuhe was the guest low nett.
The camaraderie of the season-opening tournament was evident at the after party as Bonne Sante hosted a wine tasting party to let the players try vintages from Spain, Italy, America and Australia, among others.
A prize presentation was then held as the members and guests had their dinner as the show featured a lucky draw, games, dancing from the caddies and a visual display of SilportĄ¯s recent honors and activities.
The Spring Membership Cup marks the start of SilportĄ¯s tournament season as several new club competitions, designed to please both the low and high handicaps alike, are currently in the planning.
