Shanghai: Thunder and rain cut short the Silport leg of the Volvo Masters Amateur qualifying round as the 100-man field could only complete nine holes in the inclement weather.
With the stormy weather chasing the players off the course, the Volvo organizers decided to declare one winner each for the best scores recorded on both the Center and East course layouts.
In the rain-shortened format, Shi Jian was declared the East Course winner as the 12 handicap shot a 4-over 40. Zhu Yinghua, a 22.8 handicap, shot a 43 to take the Center Course title, while Li Xiangyang, a 4.8 handicap, shot an impressive 2-over 38 to win the Volvo car owner category.
All three players now advance to a China final on August 25 where players from 24 cities around the country will compete for three spots available for a World Final to be held in Spain in October.
The amateur event that started as the Volvo Klassik in 2003 has since grown into a global event with more than 70,000 players participating in qualifying rounds in 20 countries around the globe.
Zhang Changping showed the world how far the game has developed in China recently when the Beijing native captured the World Final in Spain last year, making him the first China amateur to win an international tournament.
