Shanghai: Golf Magazine was in a mood to celebrate when the country’s premier swinging publication celebrated its seventh anniversary with an invitational tournament at Silport for 50 readers and club members.

With the staff of its sister publication, Golf Week, also on hand for the festivities, the players teed off in a traditional stroke-play format following a speech by Golf Magazine general manager Wang Zhigang.

As the ladies started from the red tees and the men the blues on the East and Center courses, the women showed that they indeed had game, as many figured prominently among the prize winners.

Wu Xingqqiong captured the ladies low gross with a respectable 89 and also took home one of the two long drive prizes. Feng Xiaoyan finished runner-up after a 90, followed by Wu Yufang with 99.

The competition was equally fierce among the men as Jin Guangxia shot an outstanding two-over 74 for the low gross. Zhang Zhihua (76) was runner-up and Fu Jieren third with a 79.

In the men’s low net category, Ding Feng topped the field with a nett 69.8, followed by Tian Cheng (70.4) and Yan Ronggui (71.8).

Other honors on the day went to Yan Ronggui (Center No. 8) and Xie Zhishuang (East No. 3) for nearest-the-pin and Zhang Zhihua who captured the other longest drive. At the dinner party afterwards, Golf Magazine chief editor Sherry Xu acted as the MC for the evening and invited some key sponsors to the stage to award the prizes. Among the recipients was Silport general manager Jack Huang who accepted a trophy recognizing the club’s top condition and cooperation in the event, and Yao Wengang who received a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label.

Drawing one of the biggest hands on the night was special guest Jiang Jialiang, the former world ping pong champion and now an avid golfer. He expressed his appreciation for Silport a club he had visited on many occasions.

“I have played ping pong for many years but in golf, I'm just a novice, said the Guangdong native, a six-time world champion in the 1980s. “I have seen so many golf courses and Silport is different from others. It is a really beautiful place and I really love it here.”
