Shanghai: The strength of China¡¯s young golf talent was evident during the opening leg of the Shanghai Silport Junior Tournament with 34 players from Shanghai, Nanjing and Suzhou competing.
Playing on the East and Center courses under rainy conditions, Ou Yangzheng shot an 82 to win the Group A Boys (ages 14-17), with Tu Ye Hongyi (84) the runner-up. Jenny Chen was the girl¡¯s champion in the group with a score of 107.
Monty Yang ran away with Group B (ages 11-13) with an impressive round of eight-over 80 playing from the white tees, while Harrison Xie (87) was the runner-up. Li Ailin (84) was the top girl, followed by Huang Yuyu (89).
The Group C (ages 9-10) champion was Steve Zeng (80), with Wang Dongyu (94) runner-up. He Sifan (99) and Chang Wenhui (106) were the top girls.
Among the younger children playing nine holes in Group D (ages eight and under), Zhou Ping shot 58 to top the boys, while Angelia Ye (56) was the leading girl. Other honors saw Wu Suowei claim the boy¡¯s nearest the pin and Zhu Xiaoyu the girl¡¯s.
The junior tournaments, which are being co-hosted by Silport and the Shanghai David Leadbetter Golf Academy, features seven tournaments through November. There are also the multi-day Junior Classic tournaments, the Silport Tournament of Champions in November and the season-ending Christmas Parent and Child Cup.
The young players will earn points from each tournament they participate over the season to determine the top boy and girl golfer in each age division.
