Shanghai: The Shanghai Education Development Fund which aids the plight of farmers’ children, whose parents work in cities, was the big winner at the 2008 Star Trading Co., Ltd. (Charity Cup) Golf Invitational held at Silport as more than 90,000 RMB was raised on the day.

Shanghai Star Trading Co., Ltd, the local agency representing famed automobile maker Mercedes-Benz, asked each of the 90 participants in the field to donate 1,000 RMB to the education cause. One participant was so taken by the needs of the children that he donated 2,000 RMB.

Also in attendance at the tournament was the president of a Putuo District school in Shanghai who had come to Silport to express his gratitude to the golfing donors on behalf of his students.

With a new Mercedes-Benz on offer for a hole-in-one, the overcast and windy conditions ensured that the generous prize went unclaimed. Playing over the East and Center courses under a New New Peoria scoring system, Ms Chen Jing proved better than the male competition as the 1.2 handicap shot a 77 to win the gross champion prize. Chen Zhangning was runner-up, two shots off the pace.

Dan Xiaohong claimed the nett champion honor as the 8.4 handicap shot an 82 for nett 73.6, just ahead of Li Yuehua (74.4) and Li Dehou (74.6).
