Shanghai: Xie Renyi proved age was only a number when he beat competition up to four years older than himself to emerge as the dominant golfer in the fourth leg of the 2008 Silport Junior Tournament.
Playing under a stroke play format over the West and North courses during the national holiday, Xie topped the field of 18 players to win the boys Group B division (11-13 years) with an impressive round of nine-over 81. Tu Ye Weilin shot an 87 to finish runner-up in the same division, while Lin Xizheng won the Group B girls with a 92.
The title for Group A (14-17 years) boys proved a fiercer battle as Tu Ye Hongyi and Tim Aubrie both shot an 86 under the sunny and warm conditions. Tu, however, claimed the group title by virtue of his taking less putts over the last nine holes.
Other honors saw Timo win the Group C boys (9-12 years) with a 105, and Cheng Yiqing (109), the girlsĄŻ title, one stroke clear of runner-up Shannon Su.
Zhu Ruiqin was the only player in Group D (eight years and younger) but he made the most of it ¨C he carded a 71 over nine holes and claimed the nearest-the-pin prize on the West Course No. 8 hole.
Wu Suowei, an eight-year-old who should have competed in Group D, instead decided to move up two divisions and compete in Group B. For his courage, the boy received a special prize from the Silport organizer.
