Shanghai: GoTone made a welcome return to Silport for the second time this year when the mobile phone giant hosted its Suzhou-based VIP Club customers in a team promotion competition.

With the weather extremely hot and overcast, the 106 participants made for a colorful sight as they were competing in 11 different teams with each side boasting their own uniform. With the tournament contested under a New Peoria scoring format, the players had two ways to win in either the team group stroke play or individual stroke play.

Playing over Silport’s North and West courses, the Suzhou Eagles team fielded a strong one-two punch in the form of Liu Man Tian and Huang Xin Yue. Both players shot impressive rounds of four-over 76 to top the field, but Liu was declared the gross champion because his 4.8 handicap was higher than Huang’s 3.6. Yang Yu Dong finished second runner-up with a gross 77.

Representing the Suzhou Gong Shang Lian Team No. 1, Huang Yong Wen captured the nett champion honor when the 14.4 handicap shot an 85 for a nett 70.6, beating Ao Zhi Guo (nett 70.6) of GoTone Team No. 2 in a countback. Jin Jian Xin was second runner-up with a nett 70.8 after a round of 84.

The Gong Shang Lian Team cleaned up in the other prizes as Li Xin Qiu put his tee shot to within five feet of the flag on the North Course sixth hole to win the nearest-the-pin, while Yuan Chen Zhong launched a 265-yard blast on the West Course ninth hole for the longest drive.

Based on their players’ total team gross score, Suzhou Eagles, Zhang Jia Gang Tai You, Suzhou Zhong Hua Yuan and Gong Shang Lian Team No. 1 finished as the top four teams and advanced to the next round.
