Wilhelmsen Ships Service made a welcome return to Silport for a third occasion when the Norwegian maritime services giant hosted its Shanghai Golf Day for a field of about 70 players over the North and West courses.
Playing under a New Peoria scoring format in partly cloudy conditions, James Cheshire emerged the most prominent player of the day. The 19.2 handicap shot a 94 for a nett 74.8 to finish runner-up to nett champion Han Dian Zhi who scored a nett 74.2 following a round of 97. Cheshire added to his prize haul with the long drive honor after a 260-yard blast on the West Course ninth hole.
Yuan Jian proved the top player among the field made up Wilhelmsen senior management and their partners from around the world as the 12 handicap registered a round of 86 for the gross champion honor. Zheng Jian Min finished runner-up, three shots off the pace.
Also honored on the day was Terje Nyaard who won the nearest-the-pin when he put his tee shot to within four feet of the flag on the North Course sixth hole.
While only 47 of the Wilhelmsen party participated in the tournament, all the guests were invited to try their hand at golf through a clinic that was on offer with Silport David Leadbetter Golf Academy professional Raymond Huang on hand to provide lessons and coaching tips. At the prize presentation after the tournament, the top three players were recognized with awards.
Overall, the Wilhelmsen guests praised the quality of the Silport course and caddie services, but many noted they had putting problems with the fast speed of the greens.
